There’s some thing disgusting about the way the politicians have been fiddling their expenses. It’s not just the abuse of power involved, it’s also the hypocrisy. They’ve spent their time telling us how much we’ve got to tighten our belts, put up with pay freezes and cuts whilst they’ve been merrily sticking their snouts in the trough and putting away as much money as they can get away with. This whole scandal has shown up our political masters for being just what they are, a bunch of greedy, lying crooks.

The word ‘Queer’ by definition means something extra-ordinary, something mildly strange and/or out of place. That according to any dictionary is its denotation (1). We all know however that the word has come to mean other things, in fact many people confuse its actual meaning for its most common usage – that of a derogatory term for homosexuals. The word however has over time changed meaning several times, having first been recorded in use in 1508 to mean ‘strange, peculiar, eccentric’ (2) For most of the 20th century however the term has been used to refer to effeminate gay males and others exhibiting untraditional gender behaviour; as an antonym for heteronormativity.

For the Economist (25/4/09), it’s “bash the rich” populism, with “soak the rich tax increases” punishing not just the 1-2% of the population affected by them, but everyone else who “aspires” to wealth (but will never see it).
